There are probably very few people in America who are unaware of the upcoming release of "Concussion"; a movie starring Will Smith that opens on Christmas Day. It's the story of the identification of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of NFL players. Even neurosurgeons like myself are looking forward to the movie, and neurosurgeons tend not to have a lot of "movie time". We're hoping that the movie "gets it right" in helping people understand what Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is, and to think about how we can better protect against it.
In many ways, this discovery affected our modern understanding of the effects of repeated trauma to the brain; even when protective equipment was used. To help movie goers better understand concussions, my practice has put together a single page listing all of our onsite articles about concussions.
