One of the benefits of giving talks like Limitless  is that I get great audience participation and always learn something myself. This night in the Q and A session a patient asked me about Lactobacillus reuteri and its relation to osteoporosis.  I had never heard of it!  So, I attach a link to the article I just reviewed for your own education.

Lactobacillus reuteri reduces bone loss in older women with low bone mineral density: a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, clinical trial

What it basically says is that the probiotic supplement L. reuteri appears to decrease bone loss in the tibias (shin bones) of women aged 75-80.  A few strong points of this study are that it’s in a high quality scientific journal and it fits the criteria for what I would call “good science” in that is a double-blind, placebo controlled, randomized study.  My conclusion after reviewing the article is that this is a valid study suggesting the probiotic L. reuteri is likely to decrease bone loss in women 75-80 and that we need larger studies to confirm this finding.  If you are ever looking at reports suggesting the efficacy of a product look for double-blind, placebo controlled randomized studies published in reputable, recognizable journals.
